Data Sharing Technology Guidance

We believe healthcare is better when systems work together. That's why Epic prioritizes development of industry-standards and actively participates in initiatives to accelerate the adoption of modern, open interoperability standards. We make one of the largest catalogs of technologies publicly available at no cost to developers on open.epic. We recognize standards take time to define and mature. For some of these instances where standards do not exist or are not mature, Epic has developed an assortment of technologies to enable purpose-built connections.

Since the volume of technologies available can be overwhelming, Epic offers a free service to point developers in the right direction to get started with connecting their product. The Technology Guidance form allows us to gather more information about your expected data exchange use case. Once submitted, our team of experts will use this information to identify all suitable technologies for your use case from our catalog of industry-standard and Private technologies. If Epic Private technologies are available for your use case, we will share details about licensing those technologies through enrolling in Vendor Services and will provide optional support for the technology. Since Epic supports many developers, and non-standards-based technologies require additional support from Epic, for a small number of the most complex technologies we require that a customer express interest in your solution before we provide you with access to technology and support.

Consultant Access to Epic Applications and Documentation

We’re here to help groups providing services to our customers get the access, training, and documentation they need to provide excellent support. In many cases, Epic customers rely on third-party staff—such as coders, technical specialists, or other experts—to assist with projects or staffing needs. Agreements are required when this work involves logging in to a customer’s Epic system, viewing Epic screens, or providing support that involves accessing Epic’s intellectual property. If your organization needs access to Epic materials to support an Epic customer, and you’re not a direct employee, medical staff member, or student of an Epic customer, you’ll need to have an agreement in place with Epic.

Access is arranged through an Application for Access, which you can submit using the button below. Our Consultant Relations team will review your request, confirm that the right agreements are in place, and guide you through the next steps. The process involves coordination between Epic, your firm, and your Epic customer, so submit your application early. Each firm must submit one request per Epic customer. If changes are needed later, simply send us an updated application and we’ll make sure everything is current.

For Patients

Epic provides tools and resources that help you manage and share your health information, connect with your care team, and stay involved in your healthcare journey.

Manage Your Care Online with MyChart

If your healthcare provider uses Epic, they likely offer you secure, online access to MyChart, Epic's patient portal, to help you manage and participate in your healthcare. Note that your healthcare provider might call its patient portal by an organization specific branded name.

MyChart enables you to interact with your healthcare provider and health information electronically from your smartphone, tablet, or internet browser. You can view and schedule appointments, review test results, communicate with your care team, and much more.

Understand Your Health Record and Privacy

Your doctor's office uses Epic software to safely store and manage your health information. This includes things like your test results, medications, surgeries, and basic details like your address and date of birth.

Depending on where you live, your records are protected by privacy laws—like HIPAA in the U.S., GDPR in Europe, or the Privacy Act in Australia. Your healthcare provider can tell you which rules apply to your records.

If you have questions about your privacy, how your information is shared, or if you want a copy of your records, contact your provider's medical records department or privacy officer. Most providers also have this information on their website.

Connect Your Health Apps and Devices

Most Epic customers enable you to connect your favorite fitness wearables and health apps to your electronic health record. You can connect your health apps and devices directly in MyChart with your permission. When these apps attempt to access your health record, you should be redirected to your healthcare provider's MyChart page to log in with your credentials (you shouldn't share your credentials directly with the 3rd party). Learn more about how to authorize an app to access your records and how to revoke authorization later.

Quickly Share Your Health Info with Caregivers Using Share Everywhere

Share Everywhere enables you to quickly share your health information with people taking care of you. You can choose to share a temporary web view of your health record summary with anyone in the world who has an internet connection, even if that person doesn't have access to an electronic health record.

From MyChart, you can generate a share code and provide it to the person you want to share your health data with. This might be a doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, dentist, or school nurse, for example. The share code recipient enters that code and your date of birth on the Share Everywhere website to receive one-time, temporary access to your health information. The person who views this information can also write a note back to your healthcare provider to help keep them informed of the care you received.
